This broadcast is the first of two Suspense appearances for Lana Turner, and is a year before her famous role in The Postman Always Rings Twice. This episode is a repeat performance of the story about a young woman who is about to inherit a large family fortune. But she’s terrified of developing the same mental illness that her mother suffered. To get the inheritance she must reach age 23 while living in her father’s old San Francisco home. If she doesn’t remain in the house, her guardians get the fortune. What could possibly go wrong?
The first performance starred Nancy Coleman and some consider that to be the better of the two productions. Details of that first production are at https://suspenseproject.blogspot.com/2023/02/1943-04-13-fear-paints-picture.html
It was originally planned for Turner to star in a second Suspense production of Eve; it is likely that Spier believed that Fear Paints a Picture was a better fit for Turner’s talent.
One network recording has survived and it is not known if it is the east or west broadcast.
Lana Turner was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The legend of her being “discovered” at a malt shop seems to be true, but she still had to have the talent needed to take direction and act. She had a very long and lucrative career that is summarized at Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lana_Turner Her radio appearances were usually as herself in variety programs and on movie-related programs such as Lux and Screen Guild.
