1946-01-10 This Was a Hero

Phillip Terry was the star of this episode authored by Martin Ryerson. He plays a young policeman who is considered a hero in town because he shot and killed an armed man attempting to rob a warehouse. He meets the wife of the perpetrator who asks him to investigate the robbery because her husband was an innately good man who would not commit such a crime. As he becomes more involved with her, the truth behind the actual event can no longer be withheld.

Terry was coming off a notable appearance in the movie Lost Weekend with Ray Milland. He was also known in Hollywood as the husband (#3) of Joan Crawford. The marriage to Crawford was unraveling at the time of the performance, and was in the major gossip columns. There may have been some extra publicity buzz around his Suspense appearance because of it.

The story was included in Suspense Magazine #2. A PDF download of the story is on the same page as the audio files.

The only available recording of the story is the Armed Forces Radio Service recording (#137). The disc was in an eBay auction in 2010.

Terry did have a good acting career, but not a long one as his interests took him elsewhere. He was most active in movies from the late 1930s to 1947. He made only occasional movie and television appearances after that. He was rarely on radio. His Wikipedia profile has more information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Terry

After the divorce from Crawford, he married twice more, with his third marriage the longest. He can be seen in five TV Perry Mason episodes. Real estate investing dominated his interests and he was quite successful at it. His timing for that was excellent, as post-WW2 California was growing at a fast pace and there were many rewards for wise efforts in that regard.
