1959-07-26 Night Man

Marsha Hunt stars in the second broadcast of the Lucille Fletcher story about woman who believes that she has seen the murderer of her mother. If so, he is freshly released from prison, and working as the elevator operator in the very apartment building where she resides! It’s a very good story, but some may feel the ending may be too predictable.

The original broadcast was on 1944-10-26 and starred Virginia Bruce. Details about that broadcast and the story are at

The program was recorded on Thursday, July 2, 1959. Rehearsal began at 6:00pm with recording commencing at 9:30pm. Production edits were made from 10:00pm to 12:00pm. Music was added in the days before broadcast.

Of the four ad spots in the network broadcast, three were purchased by AT&T, Hastings Manufacturing (auto parts), and General Motors. The fourth spot was allocated before broadcast.

The surviving 1959 recording is likely an aircheck of a network broadcast. It is missing its opening announcement, Robson’s monologue, and some of the closing. Robson’s opening monologue, however, is available from the original script:

Most of us live out our lives in quiet desperation. Beset by nameless fears, plagued by unconscious guilts we adjust our neuroses to reality as best we may and somehow stay clear of the loony bin. Fortunate is he who knows what frightens him, for then he can do something about it – as does the young lady in the story you are about to hear – certainly there is nothing like action to dispel anxiety. And any psychiatrist can tell you that if you face up to your fear, it usually disappears – or does it? Listen. Listen then as Miss Marsha Hunt starts in “Night Man,” which begins in just a moment –

International entertainer and impressionist, and expert on classic radio history, Keith Scott has added his talent to The Suspense Project. For the Suspense episodes that are missing the introductory monologue by William N. Robson, Keith is supplying readings of those openings from the original scripts in the “voice of William N. Robson.” He has been approved by Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, Walt Disney Company, and Universal Studios, for authorized voicings of many of their most famous cartoon characters. Mr. Scott resides in Australia.
