Edmond O’Brien is author-turned-bodyguard who fails to protect his employer, a famous pollster, from being killed. Police think it’s suicide. O’Brien’s character thinks it’s murder and related to his secret survey project and a notebook that contains strange cryptic messages. O’Brien’s character is in danger, because he knows too much about the pollster’s work. Who is the culprit? The person may be right in front of you but you won’t let yourself see it.
The authors of the script were Lois Eby and John C. Fleming, cousins, who wrote novels, short stories, radio plays, screenplays, and other projects. They wrote together and individually. This is the first of their two Suspense scripts. Their 1947 novel, The Velvet Fleece, was in production at the time of this broadcast and released as the September 1948 film Larceny (The film can be viewed at https://archive.org/details/larceny1948). Lois was a screenwriter for the 1938 Lone Ranger movie serial. In the 1950s their work together and solo could often be found in mystery magazines. This broadcast script was adapted by Joel Malone. He was known most for his work for The Whistler for radio and its syndicated television series, and was a key contributor to the success of that franchise.
