Everett Sloane stars in a Sam Pierce story about man who plans to marry into the family of a wealthy girlfriend. She invites him to be in the crew for the Honolulu yacht race they will compete in. He’s been lying about his social position and about his boating prowess. He studied the history of the race and of the nautical terms and procedures to seem competent and experienced. Her cousin quickly suspects he’s a pretender, in both his boating skills and suitability as a possible husband. The tensions between them escalates, and they realize that the only way to end it is that one of them is thrown overboard… where sharks are known to be.
This episode was scheduled to coincide with the 1959 Transpacific Yacht Race. Scripter Sam Pierce was on one of the boats, Queen Mab, as a crewmember. In the boat’s class, they finished… last. They were seventh out of seven in their class and thirty-sixth overall.
The program was recorded on Wednesday, July 1, 1959. Rehearsal began at 4:00pm, and recording began at 7:30pm. Production editing was done between 8:00pm and 10:00pm.
The surviving network recording has been edited and is in low quality sound. It is hoped that an Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS) transcription disc may be found in the future to replace the current recording.
Ad spots for the national broadcast were purchased by Mutual of Omaha insurance, AT&T long distance, Reynolds Tobacco, Hastings Manufacturing (auto parts), and General Motors.
